The Congregation of the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church (SMMC), was founded in 1971 by Bishop Anthony Konings (SMA) from Holland, who was then the Bishop of Keta Diocese in the Volta Region of Ghana in the Western part of Africa.

His dream of founding a Religious Institute aims at creating opportunities for girls who felt they had been called to serve God through a consecrated way of life.

It was also to serve the needs of the Local Church.

Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church (SMMC) were trained by OLA Sisters who were then working in the Diocese. It is a Diocesan Institute of Active Religious Women tasked with a mission to respond to the call of Christ to spread the Good News of the Kingdom of God by our way of life.

Our founder chose teaching and nursing as the main Apostolate, but we have now added social work due to the needs of the Diocese. We teach at all levels in our schools, teach Catechism in the Parishes, and care for the sick in our hospitals and clinics, and also visit the sick at their various homes. Those for Social work are into Commercial, Catering and Vocational aspects, and also working with the women in the Church.

The Congregation has a membership of eighty (80) Sisters, with 19 Community Houses including the formation houses, which the Novitiate is part of it.

May Mary, the Mother of the Church, continue to intercede for us all.
